Surfing Siargao:
A Complete Beginner's Guide
Sweet Paradise Villa · Siargao, Philippines · Updated 2026
Siargao is the Philippines' surf island par excellence. World-famous for Cloud 9, it also hides dozens of waves suited to beginners — including the mythical Jacking Horse, just 20 metres from Sweet Paradise Villa. Here's everything you need to know before paddling out.
Why Siargao is perfect for learning to surf
Unlike Bali or Morocco, Siargao offers a still-preserved environment, few crowds in the water, and spots for all levels within a few kilometres of General Luna. The island attracts thousands of surfers each year, but the vibe remains relaxed and welcoming — perfect for learning without pressure.
When to surf in Siargao
The best surf season in Siargao runs from October to April. Waves are consistent, winds are favourable, and the sea is rarely rough enough to be dangerous for beginners.
From November to February, the northeast monsoon can make some spots trickier, but sheltered spots like Jacking Horse remain surfable.
💡 Our tip: Avoid French school holiday peaks if you want the wilder, quieter island.
Best spots for beginners in Siargao
Jacking Horse — Sweet Paradise Villa's home spot
Just 20 metres from our villa, Jacking Horse is a left reef break with gentler sections that are perfect for progression. The big advantage: from your terrace, you can watch conditions before even touching your board.
Stimpy's
The go-to spot for beginners — soft, long waves over a sandy bottom. Most surf schools in General Luna start students here for their first sessions.
Rock Island
A bit more power than Stimpy's, but a consistent and generous wave. Perfect for transitioning from beginner to intermediate within a few days.
Cloud 9
Siargao's legendary spot is reserved for experienced surfers. Don't paddle out as a beginner — but do walk out on the boardwalk. The view is spectacular.

Taking surf lessons in Siargao
Several surf schools operate in General Luna, offering beginner-friendly packages. Expect to pay between ₱600 and ₱1,200 per session (1 to 2 hours), board and instructor included. Most schools offer multi-session packages at reduced rates.
- Book your first session early morning — waves are generally cleaner
Surf gear rental
Board rental is available everywhere in General Luna, from ₱300 to ₱600 per half-day. As a beginner, go for a longboard or mini-malibu — more stable and easier to handle in small waves. A wetsuit isn't needed — water temperature stays around 28–30°C year-round. A UV-protection rashguard is recommended to avoid sunburn during long sessions.
Practical tips before your first paddle
- Learn to read conditions: hollow or soft waves, wind direction, currents
- Respect right of way rules in the water
- Stay well hydrated before each session — sun and effort are intense
- Protect yourself from the sun: waterproof sunscreen, rashguard, cap in the water
- Never surf alone as a beginner, especially on reef spots
